Tuna can be caught year-round off the coast of Stuart (we catch them year-round too), but tuna fishing is at its best during the spring and summer seasons. We catch different types of tuna: yellowfin, blackfin, bonita, and skipjack.

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin tunas begin to show up in the east side of the Gulf Stream in April until August. Their size ranges from 35 to 75 pounds (though it’s not unusual to catch one over 100 pounds) and the best months to catch them are in June and July. The yellowfin tuna is among the hardest fighters in the ocean and they taste really great. Yellowfin tunas can be found swimming 60 to 80 miles off the coast of Stuart and the [name of charter boat] has the perfect combination of comfort, speed and fishability that’s needed for a bountiful tuna fishing trip on the east side.

Blackfin Tuna

The blackfin tuna can be found much closer to the coast of Stuart. Their size ranges from 5 to 25 pounds. They begin to show up around 10 miles off the coast in March and April, and continuing throughout the summer season. Although they are smaller than the yellowfin tuna, they are also quite delicious and they’re always ready to play the game. You can usually expect to catch up to 20 blackfins per trip, with no size or bag limit.

The most abundant of the tunas we catch is the bonita. They can be caught year-round and are a fun option for light tackle fishermen. Their size ranges from 5 to 25 pounds and they are notorious for putting up a great fight while hooked. However, most fishermen refrain from catching bonitas due to their odd taste, which is more similar to cat food than human food. They can usually be found swimming in large groups about a few miles off the beach.

Skipjack Tuna

Last but not the least, the skipjack tuna is a seldom-targeted tuna preferring to stay deep in the heart of the Gulf Stream. Their size ranges from 10 to 20 pounds and are usually found mixed in with yellowfin and blackfin tunas.
